Bascinet with a visor Hounscull and brass decoration

Hounskull (German hundsgugel – dog’s hood) is a kind of bascinet with a highly elongated cone-shaped visor. Such form increased its surface area, enabling to make more vent holes. It allowed a warrior to breathe easier. The vent holes often located only on the right side of the helmet, because in a mounted battle on spears the left half of the head was in more danger. The conical shape and smoothness of the left side of the visor helped enemy’s spear to slide off even in case of a heavy stroke. European knights used the helmet in the XIV-XVth centuries.
