Scutum
A scutum is a type of shield that was used by the Roman military during the time of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. It was a large, rectangular shield, typically measuring about 3.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide, with a slightly curved surface that was designed to deflect incoming blows. The scutum was made of wood, with a metal boss (a rounded, central piece) and metal edging for added protection. It was carried by Roman legionaries, who were heavily armored infantry soldiers, and was used to protect against both melee and ranged attacks. The scutum was an essential piece of equipment for the Roman military, and it played a key role in the success of the Roman legions on the battlefield.
